Should You Apply Through a Recruiter or Through a Friend at the Firm? A Recruiter’s Perspective on a Common Candidate Dilemma
One of the questions candidates may ask during a legal job search is: “Should I apply through you, or should I go through my friend at the firm? ”It is a fair question, and unfortunately, there is no universally correct answer. Having worked both as a legal recruiting manager in law firms and now as an independent recruiter, I have seen this issue from multiple perspectives. The reality is that both recruiter submissions and employee referrals have meaningful advantages and potential drawbacks. Other recruiters may strongly disagree, but the best path often depends on the specific firm, the relationship involved, the candidate’s goals, and the personalities at play. Importantly, this is not a post arguing that one route is always superior to the other. Rather, the goal is to help candidates think through considerations that are often overlooked in what initially seems like a straightforward decision.
Why Law Firms May Want to Reconsider Limiting Recruiters to Partner Placements
Recruiters are not a substitute for strong internal recruiting processes, nor are they necessary for every hire. Some positions absolutely can and should be filled directly. But legal recruiters often provide much more than resumes. We provide access, outreach, market intelligence, candidate development, relationship-building, and strategic guidance throughout the hiring process. The legal market remains highly relationship-driven. Many of the best opportunities and best candidates are never publicly visible .For firms willing to engage thoughtfully with trusted recruiters, the return can extend well beyond simply filling an opening. It can mean accessing talent that otherwise never would have entered the conversation at all.
