One of the questions candidates may ask during a legal job search is: “Should I apply through you, or should I go through my friend at the firm? ”It is a fair question, and unfortunately, there is no universally correct answer. Having worked both as a legal recruiting manager in law firms and now as an independent recruiter, I have seen this issue from multiple perspectives. The reality is that both recruiter submissions and employee referrals have meaningful advantages and potential drawbacks. Other recruiters may strongly disagree, but the best path often depends on the specific firm, the relationship involved, the candidate’s goals, and the personalities at play. Importantly, this is not a post arguing that one route is always superior to the other. Rather, the goal is to help candidates think through considerations that are often overlooked in what initially seems like a straightforward decision.
